Mobile Brake Inspection - What We Check at Your Location

One Day Brakes performs a thorough brake inspection at your home, office, or safe parking location. Here is exactly what we check, measure, and report.

Quick Answer

One Day Brakes inspects brake pad thickness (inner and outer on each axle), rotor thickness and condition (scoring, cracks, rust), caliper movement and slide pin condition, brake hardware (clips, shims, anti-squeal material), brake fluid level and condition, brake hose visual inspection, and parking brake function. We measure and report everything - then quote before doing any work. No pressure. No upsell. We tell you what needs attention now and what can wait. Call (281) 249-9601.

Brake Pad Thickness - What We Measure and Why

New brake pads have 10-12mm of friction material. Replacement is typically needed around 2-3mm. We measure both the inner pad (caliper piston side) and the outer pad (caliper bracket side) on each axle - they can wear at different rates if the caliper slides are sticking.

We also inspect the pad surface for glazing (hardened surface from overheating), uneven wear patterns, and the condition of the wear indicator tabs. Wear indicators make contact with the rotor at about 2-3mm and cause the characteristic squealing noise that warns you to schedule service.

Rotor Thickness, Scoring, and Condition

Caliper Movement, Slide Pins, and Brake Hardware

A sticking caliper is one of the most common causes of uneven pad wear, premature rotor wear, and - in severe cases - smoking brakes. We check that each caliper slides freely on its slide pins, that the piston retracts properly, and that the caliper bracket bolts are tight.

Brake hardware includes the anti-rattle clips, shims, and pad retaining springs. Worn or missing hardware causes brake noise and can allow pads to vibrate against the rotor. We inspect and recommend hardware replacement when needed.

Brake Fluid, Hoses, and Parking Brake Check

We check brake fluid level and color. Dark, contaminated fluid or low fluid level are both warning signs. We visually inspect brake hoses for cracking, swelling, or deterioration - rubber hoses degrade over time and a failed hose means total brake loss on that circuit. We also test parking brake function and cable condition.

Common Questions

How long does a mobile brake inspection take?

A thorough brake inspection at your location typically takes 20-30 minutes. We inspect all four corners and report findings before quoting any work.

Do you charge for a brake inspection?

The inspection is included when we perform brake service. If you just want an inspection with no service performed, call (281) 249-9601 to discuss current inspection scheduling.

What is the minimum brake pad thickness before replacement?

Most vehicles require replacement at 2-3mm of remaining friction material. New pads start at 10-12mm. We measure and give you the exact reading at each corner.

Can you inspect my brakes at my home?

Yes. We come to your home, office, apartment complex, or any safe accessible location. We bring all measurement tools with us.

What does a bad rotor look like?

Signs of a bad rotor include deep scoring or grooves, cracks, blue discoloration from heat, heavy pitting from corrosion, and thickness below the manufacturer minimum specification. We check and measure all of these.

How do you check caliper function?

We check that the caliper slides freely on its guide pins, that the piston compresses and retracts properly, and that the caliper bracket is secure. A sticking caliper is a common cause of uneven pad wear.

What is brake hardware and why does it matter?

Brake hardware includes the anti-rattle clips, shims, and springs that hold the pads in place and reduce noise. Worn hardware causes squealing, rattling, and inconsistent pad contact with the rotor.

How do you check brake fluid?

We check the fluid level in the reservoir, note the color (dark brown fluid indicates contamination and moisture absorption), and note any low fluid level that could indicate a leak or worn-down pads.

Should I replace hardware when replacing pads?

We recommend replacing hardware when replacing pads. Most pad sets include replacement hardware. Reusing worn clips and shims with new pads can cause noise and reduce pad performance.

How do I book a mobile brake inspection?

Call or text (281) 249-9601. Tell us your vehicle, location, and concerns. We schedule at your location and report what we find before recommending any work.
