Electric Vehicle Brake Note
Rivian R1T and R1S trucks use regenerative braking to recover energy and slow the vehicle under most driving conditions. This reduces friction brake wear significantly compared to traditional trucks — but it does not eliminate it. Hydraulic disc brakes are still required for hard stops, emergency braking, trailer towing, and low-speed situations. Brake pads, rotors, calipers, and brake fluid still wear and require periodic inspection and service.

Electric Vehicle Brakes
Why Rivians Still Need Brake Service
Rivian's quad-motor platform uses aggressive one-pedal driving and regenerative braking to handle most deceleration. This means friction brakes are used far less than on a gas truck — your pads and rotors may last significantly longer than expected.
However, there are a few things to watch for with any Rivian in Houston's climate:
- Rotor surface rust — Infrequent friction brake use in Houston's humidity can cause rotors to develop surface rust, leading to noise and vibration even when pads have plenty of life left.
- Glazed pads — Rarely-used pads can glaze over, reducing stopping power when the friction brakes are actually needed.
- Brake fluid degradation — Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time regardless of how often friction brakes are used. Periodic checks are still recommended.
- Trailer towing loads — R1T owners using the truck for towing will use friction brakes more heavily, accelerating wear.
We inspect all of these during a mobile brake visit and confirm findings before recommending any service.
Parts Availability
We Verify Before We Schedule
Rivian brake parts are not stocked at every supplier. Before we book your appointment, we confirm that the correct pads and rotors are available for your specific R1T or R1S year and configuration. If parts are unavailable or require an extended lead time, we will tell you upfront — no surprises, no wasted trip.
